German Aerospace Center DLR
Institute for Technical Thermodynamics

The research and development activities of the Institut fuer technische Thermodynamik of the German Aerospace Research Center (DLR) in Stuttgart, Germany, are concentrated mainly on three fields:

  • low temperature fuel cells with H2 and methanol as fuel (PEFC/DMFC)
  • fuel cell systems for stationary and mobile applications
  • ceramic high temperature fuel cells (SOFC).

For the low temperature fuel cells a combined dry spray and rolling technique is applied which allowes a considerable reduction of the required content of noble metals and hence of costs. For the high temperature fuel cells a modified specifically adapted plasma deposition method (VPS) plays an important role allowing for very efficient and thin cells of second generation suited for reduced application temperatures (around or below 800° C). THe DLR is presenting the high and low temperaure Fuel Cells on the
Group Exhibits Hydrogen + Fuel Cells - Technologies 2001 in hall 18.

Company Information

The Institute of Technical Thermodynamic is one of 31 Institutes and Organisations of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center). Its topics are:

  • Solar thermal energy technology
  • Systems analysis and technology assessment
  • Electrochemical energy technology, including:
  •

    - Polymer electrolyte membrane and solid oxide fuel cells (PEFC; DMFC, SOFC)
    - Electrolyzer and fuel cell system technology
    - Modeling of fuel cells
    - High power electrolysis
    - Vacuum plasma spraying

News at HANNOVER FAIR 2001:
The institute presents at the polymer membrane fuel cell a innovated, automatic low cost production techniques based on the dry spraying coating and rolling process. The technique will be live demonstrated on the booth.
The PEFC system technology presents two fuel cell laboratory cars, a simple dynamically operable 2.2 KWe PEFC-system and newly developed replacement for batteries on the basis of a PEFC-system.
For the high temperature fuel cell different components of planar and tubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are shown which have been developed by applying the vacuum plasma spray technology.

Das Institut für Technische Thermodynamik ist eines der 31 Institute und Einrichtungen des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind:

  • Solarthermische Energietechnik
  • Systemanalyse und Technikbewertung
  • Elektrochemische Energie- und Speichertechnik, dazu zählen:
  •

    - Polymermembran- und Oxidkeramik-Brennstoffzellen (PEFC, DMFC, SOFC)
    - Elektrolyse- und Brennstoffzellen-Systemtechnik
    - Modellierung von Brennstoffzellen
    - Hochleistungselektrolye
    - Vakuumplasmaspritztechnik
